  1. I've always favored the approach that while there are bad reactions and analysis of content, and that there are objective elements in all art forms so that an aesthetic grade can be loosely derived, there is no single source that or group that has a monopoly on truth when it comes to art. Taking a look at Roland Barthes, a famous literary critic that de-emphasized the elitism inherent in authorial intent, I want to point you to his quote on that: That is a wonderfully profound philosophy that places must of the power of interpretation on the consumer/audience of art, but even though it supports the non-creator, it can still be applied to cases when individual tastes and analysis are subordinated to a group message. So, to answer your question, no the fandom are not gods of judgement here, nor are the show creators. Interpretation and general quality can be measured on an individual level depending on the value model the individual uses. For me, Season Six was fine, though not as good as the two seasons that preceded it. A few episodes this season were God Tier, and quite a few where enjoyable in their own right. That is a conclusion some may agree with, and some may disagree with. Both can be correct.

    Season 6 - Ranked

Pretty legit generation. The interesting thing is that outside of the last two episodes, the bottom half were alright, but what I typically call 'middling' episodes. Not offensive but not spectacular. Enjoyable at one level or another. Why are people so excited for Season 7?

Stop me if you have heard this sentence after a Chicago Cubs fan suffers through a losing season. "Next year is the year the Cubs are going to win it all!" It would likely depend on what aspects of the show people enjoy in general, mixed with the promise of what entices them. For me, there are still unanswered questions in the lore, and character/species backstories that I would like to see revealed. Season six did try new approaches to the narrative (new for this show anyway). I point to the season six finale as a reason for my anticipation of what will come next. I look at the positives of the last season and hope to see more of that and something new. "Season seven is the season the writers are going to win it all."

Why is Hasbro keeping Season 7 a secret?

I believe we will likely get the press release announcement right before the US airing of the finale. I'm not sure if the delay in announcement is related to the film, but you can speculate that there may be specific episodes that they want to use either hinting at elements in the film. There could also be production resource sharing that needed to be sorted out (has there been any confirmation if DHX upgrading animation platforms?). I do know that investors will be worried if there is an overlong gap of anything Pony on TV. This was acknowledged in past investor meetings, so I think we are looking at another spring launch. Either way it's just all guessing for right now, the good news is the show is continuing.

    I'm new to this

Welcome. Yes IPB can be a bit tricky to get used to (all forum software can be), but after a little while it becomes second nature. Good luck on the degree aspirations! That's one thing I've never had any talent for.

    Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree

I think the film had a fair amount to like about it. Most of the songs were enjoyable, the environment was fun, and the entire Mane 7 seemed to have legitimate moments to shine that didn't feel too tacked on or cursory. I also appreciated that the climax was a true team effort. AJ, Fluttershy, Rarity, Dash, and Pinkie stepping up sans the other two was a nice touch.
  9. Yeah I was going to mention this earlier myself. Production studio and most actors are in Canada, it is written in the US and owned by a US based company, and also animated overseas ... From a work product perspective it's really an international show. Then again I suppose that case can be made for nearly every entertainment brand these days.

What if a cast member passed away?

I suspect for some that the reaction would depend on the character in question, from both an emotional level and production level. The unfortunate passing of any of the cast would trigger an outpouring of grief and support for the deceased ... that goes without saying. I'll try and aporoach this without forming an embolism by using Tabitha as an example. She voices my favorite character, appears to be a genuine individual who is pleasant (and hilarious) to talk to, does a damn good job on her characters, and voices a fair amount of them. Outside of the emotional impact that her passing would have, replacing her would be a challenge for the show due to her talent and breadth of characters. I admit I would likely hold any replacement to an unfair criteria, and be admittedly biased against anyone stepping up to voice Rarity ... at least at first. If the new actor did a decent job, I would likely change my tune eventually and accept her and recognize the talent, but almost guarantee my heart and nostalgic mind would always belong to Tabitha's take on the character. A similar reaction would be possible for most of the characters. If a guest VA passed, I would almost rather they not recast the character out of respect. Just some lachrymose musings on the subject.

  12. Pretty much what Askre said. I've always thought Spike occasionally eclipsed the Mane characters in some episodes where he was a supporting character. I maintained throughout the last few seasons that his character held a lot of promise. Unfortunately he was not utilized well, and it often felt he was taking two steps forward but there steps back. Season Six started nailing him down with several well received episodes. I think we are done with his eps for now, but Spike certainly had a great run this go around.

  14. I was agreeing with you, or at least lending your view some additional acknowledgement. I've seen the 'great battle requiring unity' theory since Season Five, so it is fairly thought of. I was suggesting that the lower key summit or celebration would be just as plausible. The only argument I can see against it is that we have had a fair amount of these types of events so some may see it as a retread. In an situation requiring unification of Equestria and beyond, I would't expect an army in the strict sense of characters in formation vs. any other characters, but linked events that required cooperation between nations to defeat some threat. Possibly similar to what we saw with the plunder vines. But yeah, a pan Equestrian hootenannie is easier to craft a story around.

    Do you like Sunset Shimmer?

Agreed. One of my complaints about the initial film was Sunset, but damn did they make me do a 180 with Rainbow Rocks. Her deleted duet in Friendship Games is also one of my favorite moments with Sunny. C'est la vie. I'm hoping that they continue to evolve the character in LOE.
  16. This would be just as likely as multiple nations coming together to defeat a 'big bad'. Another possibility would be a larger 'Friendship Summit' similar to what we saw in Princess Spike, but this time focused on the various species coming together.

Thoughts on Spike's Love of Rarity?

Properly addressing Sparity is one of the last items on my pony bucket list. For character development I want it to end through Spike growing out of his crush instead of Rarity letting him down. Having that crush evolve into a close friendship is the more healthy route and places Spike on more mature footing. It could also be one of his big moments in the show if handled right.

    Thoughts on Spike.

In seasons 1-5 Spike has been a decent character when used in a supporting role, especially to comment on the shenanigans on the other characters. Most (though not all) of his solo appearances seemed to consistently undermine the character. Then Season 6 happened. So far all of his solo episodes in S6 have been a higher level of quality and (as others have mentioned) the writers seemed to have a better grasp on where they want to take the character. Would we be legitimately seeing Spike as a diplomat/ambassador for other species before this season? Outside of wishful thinking from his fans, no.

    Star Wars or Star Trek?

I'm a fan of both franchises, but I am a dyed-in-the-wool Star Wars fan. Some of my earliest memories involve the original films in theaters and playing with the Kenner toys. Shit, I even ran a phpBB board in the lead up to and during the Prequel years.

I rarely let things get to me, but on the rare occasion that something does my wife normally steps in and calms me down. Writing helps as well.
