I don't like ignoring episodes because they mess up stuff. I feel like I'd be cherry-picking to keep a narrative that I want. This is why I think that intention is very important. I doubt that the producers wanted the audience to think that Luna didn't have reasons to feel guilt. It keeps a screw up like this one from ruining the whole thing.

I find it funny how the dreams seem to be so divisive. To me, they didn't influence the episode enough to make me feel strongly one way or another. Also, I think the ending wasn't really rushed. The problem, to me, is more that it simplified too much the situation. These seem similar, but are different. A rushed ending is missing something. I think that it's not missing anything, just that Twilight's speech to Luna was exactly what was needed, but it was too effective. So, what I think is that Luna hearing that from Twilight was a good way to solve the problem, but at the same time, it feels too little. Maybe the issue should've been dissolved into multiple episodes where Luna can see, from different points of view provided from her friends, that she should forgive herself and move on. Maybe the Tantabus could've been a season-wide villain, but that would've changed too much, I think. I don't know if MLP could've pulled that off. What I mean is that I was satisfied with the ending we got, but I also think that the whole thing could've been handled Finally, I think it's criminal that Celestia was brushed off the episode like that. At the same time, I don't feel comfortable saying that Celestia's closer relationship with Luna should've brought her into the episode, when I felt that Starlight Glimmer worked just nice in A Royal Problem. In fact, I think that this close relationship between the two sisters may not even exist at all. In the end, the only thing that really bothers me in this episode is that Nightmare Moon didn't even have the chance to do things that would cause Luna to suffer so much with guilt.

I can't help the feeling that Celestia's lost a lot of her fans to Daybreaker. Just kidding. @LostSanity I can see why people like this sort of thing, but I'd prefer they didn't. I think that the franchise treats Celestia so badly that the only thing that she has left of good on her is that she never "fell". Though I could like this idea after the cartoon showed Celestia's good and competent side for a change, because without that, the whole thing would just lose it's dramatic power.

I was thinking of something to say about this episode, but people already had pointed all the things that I would already, but there is one thing that I haven't seem: how good of a character I think Moon Dancer is. When Starlight Glimmer started appearing again as a character next season (?) one thing that annoyed me about her is that I always thought that she had a weak motivation for the things that she's done. Well, not only I think that Moon Dancer, at the time, was an excellent mirror of Twilight, if she never had made her friends, but she's also "Starlight Glimmer done right", in the sense that her reaction to that event where was left behind turned her sour, and not into a... Well... Insert your favorite moniker for Starlight Glimmer.

I get this, and it sounds wishful. I don't think that the producers care for feedback at all. But that's not what I asked. I asked about the plot for said episode. Because my point is that Celestia is not an open book anymore. For one, she doesn't have any sort of special magic, like Luna, so that avenue is dead. They made it clear that her only job is ruling Equestria and teaching magic. Since I doubt they'll make an episode about any of that that, it leaves us to another episode of Celestia doing something that has nothing to do with her actual job. Other than that, they'll keep doing what they are already doing with her. It's not that I wouldn't like an episode about Celestia actually being a teacher or a ruler, though. I doubt the cartoon will try it. To be fair, I think that with some creative thinking, they could fit any of that in an episode about something else, but I also don't see that happening after six seasons and a half of Celestia being ignored for the sake of the plot most of the time and that is when she's even mentioned. In the end, I really can't see them giving Celestia any more than they did in this episode.

Man, I get the feeling you're not reading what I'm posting. Okay, then. Maybe you're seeing something I'm not. How do you see them making an episode about Celestia now that they didn't in this episode, on season 7?

@Nuke87654You know I love your reviews and that the last thing I want when I fire up Chrome to come in here is to antagonize people I'd rather be friends with. But people are letting the fact that they liked the episode (which I did too) and that they want Celestia to the point they're getting anything and praising it when they should be asking for something better. Because let's be honest. MLP doesn't give a fuck about "ruling Equestria", so if that's going to be done, it needs to be done right because it's very unlikely that it will be revisited. So, here is their exchange in the episode. I want to punch Luna in her snout so hard that she changes into Nightmare Moon and back. But look at the word choices. They didn't even bring Celestia to say that Luna shouldn't presume to know what it's like to govern Equestria. But that is secondary. You're mentioning the fact that the fundraiser failed. What happened in that particular scene? Fuck this noise. They could've done anything with Luna except have her fail at smiling (writing this feels like a failure on itself), because that sums up Celestia's work while Celestia is supposed to be saving Starlight Glimmer from... Which Luna says after Celestia wimped out and went to get her sister. Fuck. This. Noise. Let me fix this piece of shit. Luna has to meet some kid (or group of kids) from the gryphon embassy (yak, since they're on a high right now) and because she doesn't know what the fuck she's doing, she says something that offends the kids. The parents get pissed and demand retraction and since gryphons/yaks/any fucking thing are so proud, there's going to be consequences for their relationship if the princess is so grossly uninterested in them. Luna then panics and calls Celestia for help. Then Celestia encourages Luna to use the magic she's got from their cutie mark exchange act like a normal fucker and fix the situation. Then, instead of idiotically mentioning how easy it is to raise the moon, since we've seen Luna struggle with the sun, she could gloat about how she helped Luna fix that mess. You're the one mentioning how important Celestia's job is and it got brought down "fillies don't get a school trip if the queen princess don't so much smile in the photo". CELESTIA RULES A NATION. WHEN SHE FUCKS UP HER JOB, THE NATION NEEDS TO FEEL CONSEQUENCES. I wouldn't even be complaining about the whole stupidity and lack of focus that was Starlight Glimmer's nightmare. Actually, I am going there, because Daybreaker is the lamest name they've given to an imaginary a villain in the show. We have Trixie for a magician, Discord for the spirit of chaos and disharmony, Chrysalis for the bug queen, King Sombra for the evil shadowy figure. NightMare Moon, for the monster that wants eternal night, for crying out loud! They're not even trying and people are praising them like they had just made the most amazing thing ever. These guys at DHX do an amazing, fun, entertaining cartoon and sometime it's even deep and knows how to explore relationships in general, but it gets dumb as a rock as soon as the plot is a bit more complicated than "Evil guy is doing X" or "Applejack told a lie". This episode deserved more care. Celestia needed more care and they wasted a perfect opportunity, one that I doubt is coming back because we're talking about MLP, not House of Cards. They didn't give Celestia anything other than a throne that is never relevant in the cartoon to occupy. This is what people call "writing into a corner". Celestia's fans should be as frustrated as I am. I bet my ass we're going to get a lot of Celestia laughing, Celestia looking cute all that stuff we all want, but because of this episode, we'll never get Celestia doing her job. She's never going to have a niche to occupy INSIDE the cartoon. It's always going to be that distant teacher, the distant ruler, while we've seen so much of the others having a presence inside the cartoon that's becoming trite. All the while, I keep seeing people ripping to shreds episodes that were technically much better, but messed a detail about an already established character that already has a place in the cartoon and is constantly being shown in a good light. Guess, what this is exactly why it stands out: some characters are so well established that it jumps out when the writer fucks up. That is a sign that they do care about the character. It's all always too vague and contradictory. Equestria is a mess by necessity because of the cartoon and episode plots. Trixie stole a city and Celestia didn't know about it. Starlight Glimmer was running loose for a whole season, getting in public places and nobody cared. The whole mess with the buffalo. Giant dragon rampaging around the town her star pupil pony that went to her magic school lives. All of that is contradictory with episodes like Dragonshy, Fall Weather Friends that show a Celestia that is paying attention and actually cares. Yes, ponies do seem to like Celestia (I wouldn't say "idolize") but the episode that came the closest to showing why spent all it's time showing Luna being bad at Celestia's job and Celestia being bad at Luna's. Dude, no one is disputing that Celestia and Luna didn't learn a good lesson in that episode. What I'm complaining about is that it was awfully executed. A single line about ponies actually praising Celestia over something she's done for Equestria would be enough. It sounds like a religion, with a god that is as useless as can be, but actually exists, and still never does anything. The problem is that you can't actually tell that Celestia is that important to Equestria because things that should get her attention get fixed regardless of her even being mentioned or not. Look at the whole thing about Starlight Glimmer. As charming as it was, the best Celestia did in this whole mess can be summed up to the fact that she told Twilight that she's as smart as Twilight was and that she should her let her follow her path. Which she won't, because that would mean SG leaving Twilight's sphere, not to mention that Twilight never tried form a harmful cult or messed up the timeline (to the point trees don't need sunlight anymore). Fuck! It makes me want to kill someone over how stupid they are with Celestia. So, just so that people don't say that I neglected it, let's look at the rest of Luna's day. She has to talk to the representatives to dispel the rumors. There should've been a headline about all the trouble that those ponies caused because they didn't believe Luna. Then there is the meeting with the representatives from Fillydelphia and Baltimare. You can't even say if Luna botched it, succeeded at it or even just slammed her face on the table because the episode cuts to after it's done and the two are happy. You tell me how well you think that went. It's the same as if the episode had just cut to Celestia waking up after fixing Starlight Glimer's dream. EDIT: I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but it's unbelievably frustrating that people are giving DHX the mission accomplished seal when they actually buried Celestia under their own inability to do anything with her. Again. For what it's worth, I don't think that Celestia has ever felt like a thousand years old being at any point in the whole series. Celestia should be legendary but everything she's ever done becomes just a setting stage for something else or an excuse so that some other thing happens. And that would be fine if the problem was that it is out of their reach, for any reason, but that doesn't affect Luna. Certainly doesn't affect Discord. Celestia should be on their level and I feel like Cadance is more of anything than she is and I swear that if Celestia ever had to fight Flurry Heart Cadance would be wondering where all the white feathers and blood came from. I often see people comparing Celestia to the God-Emperor, or some greek deity, a real-word queen. Which is as asinine as can be, but there is a point to be made out of it. These characters usually have a story that is tragic by design. Their ambitions fall under the weight of greed, innocence or even their incapacity to overcome their problems. Celestia's is one that's become tragic by lack of design. She's supposed to be the ruler, but she's never given the opportunity because the cartoon is busy with something else. A protector but she can't because it's up to other characters to fix the problem. You people know where I'm going. This episode could've fixed all that, if only they tried to design a little of greatness into Celestia.

I'm not talking about Luna's guilt. I'm talking about real consequences for failing at Celestia's job, especially when put next to the consequences of Luna failing in her normal job. I explained why I think this is a big deal. In fact, I've talking about this ever since people started talking the princesses and their role in the cartoon. Also, I remember you agreeing with me several times. I didn't say that. I said that the episode doesn't show that Celestia's job is important. Especially in comparison. What episode has this information? None. People just assume that. The cartoon has shown you that Luna is bad. Period. You don't know how good Celestia is at it. Again, this is my problem with the "switch" scenario. At best you assume that she is good, but the cartoon hasn't told you that. In the end you're multiplying a number by an unknown variable and reaching a result that you like (granted, I do too), but the point is that even though I'd like to say that Celestia is what keeps Equestria from degenerating into a bigger mess, I can't say that. Sure. They gave Celestia one tiny bit of personality. And she makes cute faces on pancakes. By the seventh season. Then they turn her into a generic "ruler". A generic teacher. Luna has unique powers that allow her to enter dreams and help her subjects, can even create a nightmare monster that could've put Equestria in danger if it escaped. Actually helps. You understand my feeling, and I understand yours, but this is the seventh season already. It's a waste of a character they could've done anything with. What needs to be clarified?

It's all played for comedy. Like I said, the episode doesn't call Luna on her lack of everything Celestia supposedly is good at. Because of it's structure, the episode only "takes seriously" Luna's job. A good analogy why this is wrong is to imagine that the episode had made a joke about ponies suffering nightmares instead of letting Luna explain why it's dangerous. And the problem here is that to me it says that those things aren't important because the episode doesn't give importance to them. It's goddamn obvious that Luna doesn't have the same level of experience as Celestia, but that doesn't mean anything because you don't know how Celestia handles it AND there are no consequences for Luna's failures. Finally, the episode didn't continue. You're making this up. Information comes from you, and not from the cartoon. I don't care about what would've happened, the episode didn't show it. As far as I'm concerned, I could simply say that Luna makes up for everyone because it was a misunderstanding. It's just as right as what you've said. Not to mention that I don't want to see what would've happened because Luna is a socially inept moron. I want to see Celestia doing her fucking job, like the cartoon has shown for Luna. It's not about what these characters aren't. It's about what they are and I don't understand why is it that they have such resistance to actually doing something with Celestia.

I think I would've liked this episode a hell of a lot more if it had come earlier in the seasons. Maybe sooner than season 4. Or maybe as late as it's come, after letting Celestia grow as a character and actually look like she's important for something other than sitting on a throne that isn't needed and being a generic politician. Looks like a godddess, comes down to being a glorified... Whatever she does as "the ruler". I liked Celestia a lot more in the earlier seasons when she was the adult that watched the children in the playground. It certainly kept her distant, but respected her character. Ironically, they finally gave her an actual personality. If only they'd giver her importance. The gist of it is that I think that the whole switch (that I just think is an awful way of explaining a character) would've been a lot better if i had seem Celestia doing her job right. To me, all this premise does is take characters out of their element, which is good, but then puts then in perspective with another character, which is also good, but when you have the character in focus so that it can overcome the challenge through bringing it's own strengths into it. According to this episode, the problem is that one doesn't understand the other's job. I wish the comics had done this way back in the past instead of the cartoon in the present. The problem is that is does Luna's part well while Celestia's job comes down to what Luna made fun of her for. (And still manages to screw up... Because smiling is hard) The episode didn't call Luna on anything like lack of political knowledge, using her political leverage to get results, didn't even bother mentioning hwo good at it Celestia is or how much good she can do, compared to Luna's ability to care for her subjects mental health. The problem is that Celestia doesn't bring anything to the climax of the episode, other than LUNA'S power. And STILL needs Luna's encouraging to succeed. Luna's failure in her part in the episode is nowhere near as serious because it was way before things got serious. It was filler, building up a dramatic contrast for the climax. I liked Starlight Glimmer, but they could've changed her with Twilight, Discord, a magical accident, one of the sisters becoming fed up and trying to make a point and the result would've been the same, and possibly less cringe-y about Starlight Glimmer's amazing magic and instincts. In the end, I feel like this episode is a good study of Luna's place in Equestria and just sucks the magic and majesty out of Celestia. As typical, even if that wasn't the intention. I've watched this episode some ten times and I dislike it a little more every time. And people wonder why I think Hasbro hates Celestia.

  17. Okay... Not that I think that these episodes are bad. This season is among the best ones, so far, for me. So, even if I think that those are "bottom episodes", I still like them. Top: Forever Filly, Parental Glideance and All Bottled up. Bottom: Not Asking for Trouble, Rock Solid Friendship and A Royal Problem.

Bat ponies: what is canon about them?

All that is canon about them is that they appear pulling Luna's chariot in the Nightmare Night episode. Other than that, it's all coming from the fandom and Luna's chapter book. I don't remember them appearing in the comics. But there really isn't much information about them, unfortunately.

The only thing I would add that rubbed me the wrong way in this episode is the way Rainbow reacted to Tank going into hibernation. I think her reaction was too much. @Nuke87654I would consider it a negative that it becomes too obvious that those scenes are nightmares and that Luna is going to make an appearance, and when she does, she seems uninterested (I don't know. Something about the voice acting feels off and I don't know if it was intentional or not). If it was just one, then I would've been fine with it, but it becomes repetitive and feels like filler.
