    Nuke's FIM Episode review thread

The problem with the gala isn't how it turned out, because it's always going to work. MLP is a children's cartoon (a "ok" one at that). Things always go right in the end. The problem is the idea behind it. It makes no sense that Celestia makes the parties and then complains that they are boring. Why does she keep doing them the way she does? If they said that she is forced to keep making the parties "boring", it would have a semblance of reason, but it would open a whole other discussion and DHX doesn't care enough. The way it is, it's like she wants to lure the high society ponies into a civilized party and then she "lives it up" and the only idiot having fun is herself, at the expense of others. Until the end, of course, when the writer puts all the characters back in their "loop" and all is fine. But I can't even say that she has this kind of malevoent intent because there is no intent behind it. It's just a plot device. She has no motivation. Also, I'm tired of people comparing Celestia to Dumbledore. To begin with, by the very nature of the cartoon, Celestia will NEVER handle a fight like that. (Not considering that the visual effects in this movie actually have some creativity and effort put behind them, I'm talking about the narrative.) Celestia isn't in control, the writer is and that is obvious, but should never be. The point is that Celestia, as a character is always taking the fall so that another character can be the hero. It's been like this since the beginning, only the cartoon had some grace about it until DHX (I think it still was Studio 8 at the time of third season) just stopped caring about this and she lost her grace. Just a lucky manipulator whose plans work because we must have a happy ending, a weak defender that sucks at fighting, an absent teacher that never did more than sending a few books for her personal student to read, a non-existent leader that is always captured or has no idea how to deal with a threat and a ruler that never rules because the writers for MLP can't figure out a way to put her in a position where she can show some weight to her title unless it serves the narrative like freeing that idiot for the wrong reason. If the title of princess even means anything, especially The only reason people say that Celestia has some quality is because the fandom infers that those must be true since she's been "ruling" Equestria for 1000 years. And even then, Nightmare Moon seemed to be doing a better job during an eternal night in the alternate timeline. That makes no sense. It blows my mind. Celestia went from a regal presence to an useless idiot full of hot air. But who, beyond her fans, cares? People think it's funny that she eats cake, sends others to the moon and is a tyrant for perfect little Luna to cry about. So she's a good character. Fuck that.

I was going to say that it happened because Shining to, so it would be different from the other examples, but it's not like it would happen without Cadance, so... Never mind.

Do you mean at the end of the episode, when Chrysalis and the changelings got blasted out of Canterlot?

    Nuke's FIM Episode review thread

It's probably my "butthurtedness" speaking, but after all they've done with Luna, Discord and even Cadance (Twilight being ruled out since she's the closest thing the show will ever have to a main character) and even background characters, I don't think I can look at Celestia and think that she's had a best anything. But in absolute terms, there is no arguing that Season 2, at least, is the one that treats her more kindly. About the rest, it sounds about right, as usual. Like I said another time, I feel weird commenting here because I just tend to agree with you. But a special mention to the part about characterizing villains.

I remember when I first saw this image on Derpibooru and it was one of my favorites for a long time until I started getting really frustrated with the cartoon and the comics that I never got to see Celestia actually being Twilight's mentor.

This review is word for word my thoughts on this episode except I didn't like the fights and I think that the bad in it hurt it a lot more Also, a few things I'm honestly tired of complaining about and I'm more interested in other stories right now. Anyway, my final grade on it would be a lot lower.

@Friendship is Horses I don't know what world you two live on and what cartoon you're watching, but I certainly would like to.

What happens to ponies who befriends humans

I want to watch this cartoon you're watching. I'm pretty sure an unicorn would have a lot of trouble casting any sort of spells with a bullet in their head. Or while being bombed with artillery or long range bombers. Or by drones. Or being gassed. Just because we have one or two Twilights and Starlight Glimmers in the cartoon doesn't mean that the whole of Equestria can do the same. Did you see the royal guards fighting Sombra's soldiers? They pretty much slap one another. What passes for strategy in the changelings collective head is smashing against a shield and gryphons can't even figure out how to fix their town without the ponies coming along or some mystical artifact. I think that you're joking, but this is absurd. Why would the changelings be working with the ponies and how would they really infiltrate our societies (plural, widely different, one more xenophobic and distrusting than the other) when in the cartoon they only manage to infiltrate pony society and act as stupid as they do because the script said so. Or can't even seem to be infiltrating other societies that would be even more defenseless than the ponies, like the yaks or even the gryphons? There are people that already hate these ponies while they're fictional characters, imagine if they appeared in the flesh. That argument about authority really makes no sense. Teenagers have been doing that as long as parents can remember.

How do you figure ponies could enslave our civilization? I can't see them winning a war against 2/3 of Earth's countries individually.

My problem with it isn't necessarily with a feminist ideology (keep in mind that I'm assuming everyone in this forum is sane). The problem is with how it can come from bad writing. This episode you just reviewed is a good example of the later. You can make dragons look like jerks, without making it look like they're jerks because they're males. This is why I think that it's unintentional. This sort of lack of subtlety happens too often in MLP. I think that the intention was to make dragons look bad and ponies look good; but because the writing was careless, the final product made you think that the difference was sex, when it should have been about race.

I'm itching to talk about the "new dragon episode", but I'll wait. ... Soon. Until the time is right... Mr. Miller's twitter comments about the show does make me think that this sort of sexism is intended. Or they didn't even realize it and he owned it at the time because he thought it's what the fandom wanted to hear. I guess to each their own interpretations and what that means...

    [Spoilers] New Characters/Designs Revealed

I think we need a few polls. Seriously, though... One can love something and still see problems with that same thing. But to me, it seems people treat MLP as if it's above reproach and that we, as the fandom, should be grateful that it exists. I, for one, happen to believe that MLP wouldn't have gone beyond season 3 if it wasn't for the immense popularity the fandom gave it and things like Mr. Miller's meltdown on Twitter really disappointed me. I've heard people talking about MLP as if it was as good and popular as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones (I'm not kidding) and entertainment giants like the Transformers, Marvel movies and Lord of the Rings. Not to mention that I'm sure Tolkien rolls in his grave every time someone says that MLP has an epic scope. Not that I think that his work was perfect, but he understood "epic". MLP doesn't and isn't allowed to. And I think that is part of the problem. People become frustrated with the cartoon or refuse to see anything wrong with it. The target audience argument becomes the traditional shut up tactic, while in the same paragraph people will sing praises to the deep development of the characters as if they're talking about Citizen Kane. Others treat the cartoon as if it's ruined because Twilight forgot something she did in the past. Tell me that episode discussions, comic reviews and the sort aren't dominated by these two feelings. The problem is that criticism gets shoved in the same bucket with those idiots that harass show and comics staff over Twitter, while every single drop of praise for the franchise is elevated in an altar of offerings. No wonder DHX thinks they can do no wrong with MLP. If you like the cartoon, want it to actually be better, the way it likes to pretend that it is, this is frustrating as all hell. That sort of frustration comes from this. About the movie itself... I love new characters. I love new locations. But I also love when locations that are already know, characters that are already presented get expanded and explored. But because the strategy seems to be adding new stuff, more, more and more. New places, new characters, new ideas... It's very likely I'll never know more about the older characters that usually get shoved aside because they must make way for the new. I'd like to know more about Canterlot. But the movie can't show me because it's gonna be busy with underwater Equestria. I'd like to know more about Celestia and Luna. How did they come to be princesses and what is their story, as I think they are the two most interesting characters in the show. But I can't, because the movie is gonna be busy with some ten new characters, at least two different locations and most of them have nothing to do with the reasons I became a fan to begin with. And I'm also not likely to see the cartoon delving into those same subjects, because to be done well, those would require time. Time that the movie would have to invest on those. So, yeah. Even though the movie hasn't came out yet, not liking it is a perfectly justifiable position. If those things are important for you.
