Well, finally. @Light Blade @Sparklefan1234 It's because people don't know what to do with her as a character. She needs desperately an episode, about her, not about someone else, that shows her good side as a princess and about what is it that she does that makes her a good ruler, a teacher etc... All people have are that drama that she banished Luna, that she's a manipulator and that she eats cake. She needs some positive character development that gives her a relevant niche in the universe of the cartoon.

Even though I didn't like the appearance they got with the Rainbow Power, I absolutely loved the idea behind it. I wouldn't complain if it returned (since I'm pretty sure the Elements of Harmony are most likely dead).

Legends of Magic S7 connection and bye to Friends Forever (Spoilers?)

I generally liked the FF series and I couldn't find too many problems with it that weren't present in the show or the rest of the comics line up. All in all, some of my favorites were in this series, though I think it's about time for it to end before it became stale. Honestly, I think that it's about time the main series ended as well. To me, all of the comics started great and declined as time went on. Now, about the new series... Seems like they're going to explore lore and the past and I like the idea. I think it will be easier to do in the comics than in the cartoon. The problem is that I can see this easily becoming a huge wave of new characters with little to do with the show. I rather see characters like Celestia be explored for once, considering she's so old and utterly underused. EDIT: I forgot to say... I definitively welcome the Legends of Magic, but I would also like to see the return of something in the likeness to the Micro series, especially with new characters in the show.

I should hope so. Even if she lost the motivation that I though she had (that she actually cared for her hive instead of seeing it just as a tool top be more powerful), I'd welcome her return in S7. Which I think is actually very likely. Maybe they'll return her dignity and she doesn't end forgotten.
  8. This cartoon can barely handle anything more complex than "Applejack told a lie"... The thing is that people might like it, considering that they swallowed "To Where and Back Again" hook, line and sinker. So it's not so much about "can DHX handle it?", but "Will people like seeing it?". Because quality storytelling really isn't a thing for the cartoon's audience. However, I doubt that Hasbro would let them do anything like what you suggest.

    Ancient artifacts and explored races

This is something I like to call (and don't know if there is a specific trope name for this) "The Distant East Effect". Pony culture seems inspired by western culture (meaning, the US), so things from other cultures automatically feel like they're more interesting simply because they're "more different" than anything based on pony culture. It's a subjective thing... More mysterious, in a way. Though personally, I think this is simply lack of creative thought or screen time investment in the part of the producers. Artifacts, like characters, are just as interesting as you know them, and you only know them as far as the producers are willing to tell you about those things.

    Nuke's FIM Episode review thread

What annoys me in this episode is that, in retrospect, after we saw the actual events from that night where Equestria the audience saw the rise of Nightmare Moon, who then terrorized Equestria with her patented eternal night didn't have time to do anything other than wipe the floor with Celestia... I don't have a clue why ponies are afraid of Luna and I feel like Nightmare Moon shouldn't even be a thing. Also, I wonder what happened with ponies who ought have asked Celestia why did her sister vanish after a fight that no one else saw. To me some episodes are so bad they ruin past episodes. Other than that, Pinkie's behavior in this episode is another instance of lack of subtlety. It's that silly twist where Pinkie is an idiot, but surprise! She wasn't being a dick... She's a genius! ... Yeah... I don't know if I should think that Luna is an idiot, Twilight is a dork (which she was...) or if Pinkie was a dick. Other than those two points, I love this episode too. It's just too charming and entertaining enough to not make me care while watching.

Loved that episode. I think it's one of the funniest in the show, and I have it as one of my favorites in the entire show. This episode, though, really makes me wish I could see some insight into how was the relationship between Celestia and Twilight in her earlier years under Celestia's tutelage, specially as Twilight seemed to be fearing failure all the time and it's Cadance that teaches her how to calm down. ... Or maybe I don't.
  17. @RK_Striker_JK_5Episodes like this one make me wonder if there isn't some Ivory Tower nonsense going on with DHX/Hasbro sometimes. With both feet on the ground though, the though that comes to mind is that they wanted to make something nice and heartwarming but missed the mark.

    Starlight Glimmer: hate or great?

Please define "unusually personal" for me, because that sounds strange: everything you mentioned here is subjective and derives from personal opinion. Even on the most basic level, simply because the threshold between good and bad development of a character, of any kind, is purely arbitrary and will vary from person to person, and even time to time. Why would someone give themselves the job of typing something if that doesn't support their argument? Can you give me an example? When you talk about language, you're basically excusing yourself to judging other people's argumentative honesty based on your interpretation of their choice of words. If someone thinks that someone reached a status too quickly, that is the definition of upstart. So you're basically saying that no one can think that SG got too powerful too fast. No one can say that her background doesn't fit her motivation, even though those are valid opinions that you would be free to disagree with, but instead, you sound like you veto any validity from these arguments simply because you don't like the wording. These are common words. Instead of going on a long tirade explaining why, it's just easier to say that her backstory is forced. I'd also say that her backstory is relevant in a topic about her interactions with other characters, specially in her case, where she was a villain and is now supposed to not be, but keeps doing "villainous things". I think you're right here. Especially when the Mane Six did get their own episodes as normal. SG is just a new character, and she can't be without screen time. Personally I don't think that Hasbro/DHX (and even IDW) are focusing too heavily on her. I just think that they're doing it the wrong way. Though I think one should be careful when defending a character that is "under the spotlight" while accusing others of complaining that theirs isn't, because this argument turns around easily, especially when argumentative honesty is the subject. I agree that reformed isn't necessarily irreproachable. In fact, I do think that a good redemption story ideally should include a relapse. It adds verisimilitude (I'm not sure this is the right word in English). But if that is to be so, I expect it to be done intentionally and in right proportion. I don't think that the writers realize the morality of what happened in that episode especially because Twilight barely called her on that. Twilight called her on shirking her lessons and brushed the whole mind altering spell like she had spilled juice on the carpet. They spent more time talking about what she didn't do. You don't approach friendship by messing with someone's mind. That is not doable and Starlight Glimmer should've been punished for this (and just because characters got away with other things, doesn't make this right). I doubt that anyone here would be friends with someone that used any mind altering method in order to coerce them into doing something that they'd rather not do. This is not "not being a model pony". If whoever came up with this knew what they were doing, this should've been the beginning of another story arc, not some seconds of light conversation. Now, understand that I don't think that this makes SG a bad character (or even "evil") To me, it's pretty clear that the intention is exactly what you said, she's not perfect. At worst I think that this puts the episode next to Over a Barrel and Feeling Pinkie Keen for not really thinking things through. But maybe I'm wrong. I AM complaining about morality within a fictional universe and making parallels to real world morality. Honestly, do you think that I'm putting too much stock in this? What is a straw man argument for you here? Saying that she has a "forced backstory"? I think I understand what you're saying, but I'd like you to explicit say why saying that someone was lazy is detrimental so that I can explain why I disagree.

    Starlight Glimmer: hate or great?

Well, that is true. But how do you know that someone is being honest and when they aren't? That thing I said in my first reply is exactly this. I assume that everyone is being honest, but it's hard to do that when you start your argument by assuming that everyone isn't. I don't understand what you mean on B, because I don't think that anyone has done that. No one said that. Agreed, though there's nothing wrong in saying that they're being lazy and careless while trying to just that. About character assassination... If one is going to complain about somethung that is wrong with a character, it feels just pointless and unecessary to the discussion, unless it's very relevant. I mean, it's true that Starlight Glimmer is repentant and istrying to fix her mistakes, but it's also true that she completely stepped on all pretense of free-will of her friends and then acted like the problem was shirking out of her friendship lessons (though, to me this was unintentional in the part of the writer, but this is what I'm talking about with "carelessness"). Unless you start by assuming that all I want is character assassination when I mention that SG has no empathy (Edit: in that scene.) And I ask that you don't start your argument by shoveling everyone else's aside as wrong, over simplifying and accusing of dishonesty.

    Starlight Glimmer: hate or great?

@Aaargh ZombiesSome people do it intentionally to make a point. You lumped everybody's arguments into two very narrow, misrepresenting and over simplifying categories and proceded to make a six paragraph argument. Then you said that people make convoluted arguments. I didn't even read the rest of what you said. You just don't like people disageeing with you.

    3) I like this character and the show better forget about everything and make it the goddess of Equestria. Don't we love a straw man in this fandom?

@LostSanity Not everyone does. I don't. And I know A LOT of people don't like SG's whole arc and would do it a lot different. The problem is that there is no "accepting" it. It happened and there isn't anything we can do about it.

Celestia owning the place and making Luna look bad? Discord just leaving? Starlight disappearing? You'd have better chances of freezing fire than getting the show's production to do that.

    Nuke's FIM Episode review thread

@RK_Striker_JK_5The problem, I think, is that we don't know Celestia. The idea makes sense in this episode if she is forced to participate in a party that is boring and that she doesn't like. Until the next episode about the gala where we learn that she plans the party... Celestia is schizophrenic.

MLP, I think ought to respect itself more. I know that this isn't very thought provoking but I think that you made a good exposition of the situation and I can't say much more than simply agree.
