    Season 7 Confirmed

Eh... I have a tendency of forgetting about them, so I tend to be too careful some times. And it doesn't hurt to mention it.

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

English is not my first language and it happens sometimes. I'll gladly clarify anything that you didn't understand. But how do you know which are which? I mentioned praising, in light of what OP said. To me, it looks like people treat the cartoon exactly like what I said: something above reproach. It's a contrast. How would I know which people are praising the cartoon just because they're "fighting the haters" or because they really do think that the cartoon is perfect? And even if we can identify these people, why not engage in a conversation if you're in control of your own time to do it? I have changed my opinion based on what people have told me in one of these conversations. People provide different points of view and these can help you like something more. You can now say that the opposite can occur. And honestly, that is the whole point of exchanging ideas to begin with. A says "I don't like this." B responds "I do. Because x, y and z." A then says "This is a good point. I hadn't thought of that." The problem is that this is rare to see because when people have this mentality that complaining is bad, they see A and think that it's just drama. It doesn't help that A is usually surrounded by a bunch of cries of "Hater!" "Leave the fandom if you don't like it." The bigger problem is that this makes valid criticism even harder to see and take seriously. I have. I have two cousins to whom I've become the "brony uncle". The little girl said that Applejack's voice in the dubbed version is awful because AJ is supposed to sound like a "texan" and not a hillbilly, so they should've made her sound like a gaucho. She also says that Chrysalis is the dumbest villain MLP has ever had and that Celestia is a moron for not realizing something was up when Twilight could (she assumes that Celestia was a mother figure to Cadance). She also says that Twilight's palace looks like a frozen wart in Ponyville and should be in the Crystal Empire. When her slightly older brother says that he liked Twilight better as an unicorn, she defends Twilicorn like a point of honor because it was the point of the whole third season to show that she should be a princess. She also used to complain that ponies never treated Twilight like a princess and that Rarity is like "those girls that marry the rich guy". Children have brains too and they create opinions. It was the whole reason why Lauren Faust wanted a cartoon with a good, strong female cast that wasn't a waste of animation. This is what brought bronies to like the cartoon too. It good and beautiful. Are you saying that the cartoon can't have an overarching story because it's trying to sell toys? Or that the production staff can't improve or shouldn't care about it because it's just to sell toys? Sorry, it really seems like that's what you're saying here. And I can't disagree enough with this, specially when the cartoon has improved season after season specially in the animation department. She is. And she'd also be dead in two weeks if I left her.

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

You sound humorously close to my mother when I was starting college, talking about how all the evil atheists there would ruin my christian purity and make me an evil atheist like them. She didn't know that I already disagreed with pretty much everything she taught me about religion and then blamed college when I finally got fed up with going to church every sunday, respecting a priest, and generally doing things that I thought was a waste of my time anyway. People watch the cartoon, think about it, reach conclusions and go to places where they can talk about it. In fact, I don't think that I've ever managed to change anyone's opinion on anything ever in the internet. Talking about the good and the bad is part of enjoying the show. With that said, I don't like it when I dislike an episode and going to forums and ED's comment section is a good way of finding things to like on that episode, because people likely have seem things I didn't or have other points of view, specially when most people downright revile any form of criticism to the cartoon. The problem is that everything must be lauded as perfect, and the writers praised as the messengers of the Fausticorn, spreading the truth of pony to the masses. This is the moment when anyone saying anything remotely bad about the cartoon is labeled "hater" and should leave the fandom. We're both talking about two sides of the same coin here. Just don't say that good fans don't go to forums and complain. They complain because they have thoughts about the cartoon that they like, otherwise they wouldn't bother. I know that I wouldn't. And it's not like any of that makes any real difference anyway. Everything still gets praised in the end, the production staff doesn't care about criticism, Hasbro is making money, the producers are making money and people are enjoying the franchise. And some are complaining about complaining. It sounds like "Shut up if you don't like what I like."

    S6 - episode 26 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

Depends on how you define relevant. Celestia was never relevant as a character after a certain point, all she does is set up the stage for other characters. I don't think that she's ever had an unique importance in an story after season 3 (And I'm being generous because I'm counting sending Twilight to the Crystal Empire). Celestia was one of the more important characters in the beginning. She looked like she was important. She was around, making sure things were going as planned. She was the mother that whatched over the little ponies. Then the cnildren grew up... I always say that mlp has grown with Twilight, the world has become bigger with characters like Twilight's friends, Luna, Cadance and Twilight growing together while Celestia was left forgotten in the background and now she's like a prop that gets in the way every now and then. This is a sign of a staff that doesn't care about the fictional world they create. Whenever Celestia does anything now it's always to serve the plot and never feels organic. She doesn't seem to have motivations or agency. Though she was important in The Crystaling, that was the best episode for her to show off her age and knowledge but she was shoved aside so that Sunburst could suddenly be useful. The problem with Celestia in my opinion is that she doesn't occupy a definite niche in the universe that the staff has competency to explore. Her presence is always ethereal and she ends up not doing anything or stepping aside while characters make their own stories happen. She's the adult in the kid's movie. They should've given her something more than "kinda ruler and mover of the sun", like they did with Luna, because those don't have a chance of being relevant in anything the show is likely to deal with. Mlp is just bad when it tries to tell a story more complex than Applejack lied. This season's finale is emblematic. Typical of a commissioned story when the writer doesn't care. Things happen without rhyme or reason, excusing the writer from following the narrative paradigm (AKA: a bunch of asspulls) in order to reach a conclusion: these popular characters go save the day and changelings get reformed. This is because mlp isn't story-driven. It's not trying to tell a story about Equestria. The world is just a background where characters do their thing. You can see it clearly in how the interactions between the characters are stellar, but the premisse is so flawed the episode shouldn't be happening. This works fine when Rarity wants a new shop somewhere, but falls apart when the story tries to reach for an overarching tale that just isn't there. The whole story happens detached from the world and seems completely souless as you could replace any character for any other and it wouldn't make a difference and problems with the narrative are too many to count. I feel like an old man ranting about how things were better in the past though they really weren't that good. I'm gonna go get started on my fanwank fic about how my OC married Celestia. Statlight Glimmer and Thorax have set the bar that low. Might even throw in a red and black alicorn for good measure.

Yeah. But in Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep we have this little piece of conversation... So how the hell does Changeling #171 pulls that off?

It was so fast I didn't even see what had happened there. By the way, how the hell does that even work? Man... The more I think about this episode the less I like it.

    S6 - episode 26 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

Don't get me wrong. This episode was one of the most pathetic things I've seen as far as Luna and Celestia are related. And you're right, Thorax did exactly that. But it's bad writing. Luna, by herself, managed to do something. It's better than Celestia. Did they say that it was one single drone? Damn... I feel bad for these characters.

    S6 - episode 26 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

Well, Luna wasn't useless on this one. She managed to use her power to warn Starlight Glimmer. That was something that only she could've done. Not very impressive, I know, but she did it. To me it's not even the idea itself that is the problem. It's that the cartoon keeps trying to do something that is just out of it's reach. It can't use characters like Celestia and Luna (and even Discord) in this sort of story without ruining them in the process. It was made for slice of life stories where ponies are worried about what dress they'll use in the gala. Not to defend a country from a threat like the evil-dark-bad of the season.

    If MLP were TV-Y7.

I was thinking about this. At first I said that all the stuff I like from MLP doesn't require a "higher" rating. It happens that I think that MLP thrives when it restrains itself to slice of life stories, with a simple story and low, low stakes. I'll put it under spoilers because it's a long one... The reason for this is that I think it fails every time it tries to go "epic". Season finales, mostly. In these episodes we get a "world ending scenario" that invariably ends up being rushed (I won't go into specifics of precisely what i was thinking because of spoilers), executed poorly and, most of all, there never seems to be a real threat, sacrifice.. The "stakes" are artificially high, meaning, it's always some monster that will rule the world (or even less, Equestria) if the heroes fail; but obviously the heroes never fail and we know that they won't because MLP doesn't really takes risks. It changes and pretends to be edgy every now and then, but it never dares to be awesome. It's always "safe".

    S6 - Episode 23 - Discussion

People learn that lying is bad. They don't "know instinctively". The way I see it, the important thing is that she understood that being honest is good because lying creates problems and being truthful is liberating in that light. I've seen other stories where the whole moral is so mishandled that the character looks like it decided that lying is bad because being honest is more advantageous.

@Ganondorf8 I think the intention is that he stoped talking so that he could pay attention to his sister's good ideas. Or something.

    S6 - Episode 23 - Discussion

This was a fine episode to me. Absolutely enjoyed Applejack, but I think that Big Mac's part in it was kinda... I don't know... Forced? I didn't really see things the way he did in the end when he decided he should stop talking, but I get the idea. Here are a few things that I want to know more about: what Big Mac was talking about trees, his cutie mark and his... I forgot the name of that thing in his neck. What happened to Derpy. And what happened to the "butthurt" pony. I guess he was complaining about Celestia... Finally, the moral of this episode is that censorship is a pretty stupid thing. And completely pointless, because there is the internet.

    Season 7 Confirmed

@StarlightGlimmer http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/FIENDship_is_Magic_Issue_1 And it kinda closes up in the Siege of the Crystal Empire arc in the main comics http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Siege_of_the_Crystal_Empire (Heavy, heavy spoilers in these links)

    Season 7 Confirmed

Nothing that can't be done better. Of course, though, I don't really trust the actual staff to do it. Thought I think that Sombra's comic isn't perfect and could easily be better but it is very good. They're generally worth it. Easy. Specially the Fiendship is Magic series.
  15. Metemponychosis

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

Well, you asked. So I thought it was okay. I'll see if I edit it out. But I'm not. I love many episodes in this very season, i think that most of them are very good, but I have a very strong opinion about some episodes. Most of them finales. And mostly because I don't think that MLP works very well with the kinds of stories they try to tell.
  16. Metemponychosis

    Season 7 Confirmed

I don't know if I'd trust the current staff to pull that off. A couple episodes, maybe, but a whole season... Sure, I'd like to get a few answers and background though. And I honestly agree with @StarlightGlimmer. We need to know more about a lot of characters. Discord would be nice. Chrysalis too. King Sombra. Maybe a new series about how it all fits togheter, filled with lore, worldbuilding, and maybe even awesome magical fights. Why not?

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

Really? I was under the impression that the reception for the last one on Equestria Daily was very good. But then I'm the one that said that the fandom still likes the cartoon as it did in the past... So maybe I'm wrong. Personally, the only finales I like are the gala one and MMC. The rest I don't like, with the exception of season 5, which I despise. This last one, is just bad to me. But I was just angry at my frustration with the episode. That should give a good idea of how I felt about the finale.

    Season 7 Confirmed

Poor Celestia just can't catch a break. Personally, I think the cartoon can go onto another season, but I don't expect it to be much better than the actual (mostly good episodes, some great episodes and a few bad episodes). I feel like the writers are already recycling ideas and is a good indication of that. Next season will probably have another one of Rarity opening a shop, Twilight getting one upped by another mighty unicorn of rushed backstory, another "Luna is fucking awesome" episode, a crazy Discord episode and a season opener and finale where the rulers/guardians of Equestria amount to nothing, and some over-glorified villain becomes the center of the action. I am officially butthurt, I have ZERO expectations that the writing staff will pleasantly surprise me, I'm sure that I'm going to hate the finale, and the present season isn't even over yet. <long, deep sigh>
  19. When I found MLP I was in college. I was studying medicine and that didn't leave me a lot of free time, but I was very antisocial and that actually gave me some free time because I didn't go to meetings, my itinerary was classes to home and then classes, hospital to home and finally I spent most of my time at home or at the educational hospital. I used up my free time with videogames and sci-fi stuff, mostly Star Trek, Star Wars, Warhammer 40k and some animes. Most of the time I would be lurking in forums and the sort or writing a "novel" about the "Silvery Lady", an artificially engineered deity and the story itself had influences from all over. Then I found MLP and before I knew it people were asking me why there was a picture of an stylized sun in my phone.

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

@AaronMkIs that so? I didn't know that... I guess it makes sense. I did like season 6, actually more than I did season 5. So it makes sense to me. Really enjoyed the TED presentation too. I do feel optimist about the future of the show, but then again, I was present at the beginning and did enjoy season 6.
  21. Metemponychosis

Why are people so excited for Season 7?

This is wrong. What you usually hear (or read) are the people complaining because they tend to be more vocal. The majority of the fandom loved this season and the last one. The fandom isn't on solid homogeneous block.

    S6 - episode 26 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

@Nuke87654 @WaterPulse YES! Down to earth is the secret with MLP. Maybe it's just me. But I can't find a story in MLP that tries this "epic" approach and works. Not even the original, first episode really manages to nail it. @Dark Qiviut I'm going to end up liking every single post in this thread...

    S6 - episode 26 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

I'm going to sit here and wait for the comments praising this episode. Because the only good things I can say about it is that Trixie was pretty funny and that the changelings look like they came out of their shell. If this wasn't MLP that had plots like "Bats!" and "The Hooffields and the McColts", I would dare to say that it was pretty clever. I mean. I think I'm looking too deeply into the design the marketing department gave them. Other than that, I'm going to stop telling people that their alicorn OC is bad and that their fanfiction destroyed one character or another. I'm going to write one of my old stupid HiE ideas about the suicidal guy that ends up in Equestria, turns into an alicorn and marries Celestia. She ought to feel flattered because the official material has set a pretty low bar and I, at least, would be giving her something respectable to do in the story. Like ruling a decent country and defending it. Fausticorn smite me if I ever make Discord unfunny, though. And also thank the Fausticorn that we have normal episodes filling the space between openers and finales.
  24. Metemponychosis

    If MLP were TV-Y7.

Personally, I don't think so. What attracts me to MLP doesn't need that.

    S6 - Episode 25 - Discussion (US airing October 22)

I already vented out my "opinion" about this episode and got it out of my system. This episode was the typical drivel that happens when MLP goes bad. It's every season finale all over again with the "plot parameter" that now it's the secondary characters (not to call then bad guys reformed before they even deserve it) that save the day. I shouldn't be angry, but DHX ought to have wised up by now. Since we're down to this level maybe they will finally use Celestia, turning her into a villain and have Flim and Flam save Equestria. I wanna see King Sombra save Equestria too! Weeeeeee! Man... It's just pitiful the way this cartoon just can't help itself.
