Dumbest moment in Friendship Is Magic

Celestia doesn't need to flaunt her authority, but the writer does if they want me to know the character. (And that is why I'm complaining about this in this topic, it's a problem of bad writing to me.) I'm not a pony that lives in Equestria and wakes up everyday to read a newspaper talking about the latest debate between Celestia and her political adversaries. I don't know what decisions she makes that makes a difference in the lives of ponies. I don't know the extent of her political power as a princess. I don't even know for sure what is a princess supposed to be in Equestria. And this is on a cartoon that has no problem to make a point that Starlight Glimmer IS powerful and magically proficient when they need the audience to know that. Celestia is just a stepping stone for every villain that wants to take over Equestria, WHEN she's even mentioned. I honestly don't have a clue about what is it that Celestia does that makes her important in Equestria. Granted, I'm not too sure about Cadance either, but you get my point. All you're saying in the first paragraph is headcanon and plot convenience, specially when Celestia says things like these and bows to Twilight: That tells me that they're equal, not that Celestia is somehow above Twilight. Then Luna simply says that something is out of her sister's sphere. So there is at least one area of decisions that Celestia has no say in and Luna does, even if it's because she simply isn't magically proficient in it. I'd have no problem with that if the two were somehow complimentary, but Celestia's part is missing. Then there is nonsense like stuff going on in Equestria that Celestia doesn't even seem to know about. Things like Starlight Glimmer's little village in S05E01, or Trixie overtaking Ponyville in S03E05. Ponies completely fine with Nightmare Moon, the goddamned villain from the pilot, ruling over them, banishing Celestia to the moon and plants that live in Eternal Night. Why do we even need Celestia again? Celestia is supposed to be: 1. Very experienced, but that is never really relevant because there is always another character that needs to figure out how to solve the problem. 2. Powerful protector, but only if it's to make a point that another character is more powerful. 3. A teacher, but she never actually taught anything, it's always Twilight learning by herself and the fandom going about how Celestia has a "hooves-off" approach. 4. A leader, but only to delegate a function to someone else and sit on her behind doing nothing or is completely absent. Unless there's something I'm missing I wouldn't be too surprised if next episode told me that ponies don't give a damn about Celestia and the country is ruled by a parliament and a prime-minister, keeping Celestia there just because they pity her. Ponies seem to care more about Twilight and Luna, Twilight is more connected to Cadance while Celestia just sits there in the background meaning nothing. And I know that it's not because it's intentional, it's because the production staff doesn't care about fleshing out the character, and, when she's around, the plot doesn't care about her and there is limited time, but Luna doesnt have this problem Cadance doesn't have this time. It's way past time Celestia got to show what she's about. To the point it's convinced me that there is someone at Hasbro or DHX that downright hates Celestia.

Am I allowed to add Starlight Glimmer's moral compass to my list already? Also the fact that Twilight's comment on that makes me think that Equestria is okay with magical violations of free-will? As if fhe problem was that SG was skipping her friendship lessons, not that she basicaly did what full blown villains have done in the show? I guess I need to chillax...
  3. I have a few theories... - That is what happens to the universe of any cartoon when it ends. - Luna pranked Twilight and made her think that reading had been banned. - Celestia finally got an episode (in some people's heads). - War with Yakyakistan happened and didn't end very well for Equestria. - Starlight Glimmer became the new main character. My second favorite - Fallout: Equestria. And my favorite... - Celestia got tired of waiting for an episode and left, leaving Luna, Twilight and Cadance to deal with Equestria. It didn't end very well either. In reality, the most likely is that the writers themselves never thought about it very long (like most things in that episode) and we're wasting our time trying to make sense of it.

Yes, that is right. The problem is that the production staff (or whoever is responsible) didn't make this choice because of that. In a relating note, I also agree that it could be very interesting bit of world-bulding for canon (I don't care about fanon in this discussion, as I feel that it would be going off-topic, though I do have thoughts on that) IF it was ever explored. And the fact that it isn't, just makes it worse for me. Specially when we have queens and kings regardless. It's just pointless, meaningless and somewhat confusing at best, or insulting at worse.

Dumbest moment in Friendship Is Magic

Oh, I forgot one and now I feel stupid for forgetting it. So much that I had to come back here and mention it just to get it out of my head. To me, it defines one of the biggest problems with the entire franchise in the way it treats its audience and it's universe. Not to mention the weird dissonance it gave the character in one of the books. Princess Celestia. Even Disney's come out of this. It's become so ingrained in the franchise that we even try to justify it.

What are your thoughts on Starlight Glimmer and Trixie

What do you mean? Do you mean to say that the cartoon has exhausted what it can do with the Mane Six? Or do you just want to see Starlight Glimmer shining? Because she doesn't need to steal the Mane Six's thunder to do that.

Dumbest moment in Friendship Is Magic

This is going to be a long one. S01E02 - Friendship is Magic: Applejack couldn't just tell Twilight that the two flying ponies that were with them from the start were going to catch her. S02E26 - Canterlot Wedding: Let's have a wedding despite some threat made against us. What the hell are we even talking about here? How did they even know that something was going to happen, taking in consideration the nature of the invasion, but didn't have a clue about what was going on? Why couldn't the changelings just enter the town in the same way Twilight and friends did? It's unlikely that Shining Armor could tell that they weren't changelings, and how would he even know what to look for? Could he even DO that? Chrysalis couldn't spare real guards to take care of her prisoner? Where was Luna when Chrysalis decided to attack? The Mane Six kicked flank to get to the chamber of the Elements of Harmony. Why did they stop suddenly and surrendered? Chrysalis just sat looking out the window like an idiot while Twilight freed Cadance. Not a single changeling to keep an eye on the prisoners? I'm also willing to call shenanigans on Chrysalis capturing Cadance without any sort of explanation like that. S03E05 - Magic Duel: Trixie just bought a dangerous artifacts on a simple store a child could walk into. Facing a problem, Twilight didn't go to her teacher Celestia, Luna or Cadance, but Zecora. A whole town's been made slave and there is no sort of response from the higher ups. As far as I know, Celestia and Luna never heard of it. S03E10 - Keep Calm and Flutter On: Suddenly Celestia can make a spell to keep Discord from messing with the Elements. S04E01-02 - Princess Twilight Sparkle: Those flashbacks ruined the most epic moments in Equestria's history and turned them into rushed, soulless exposition. Nightmare Moon's one was a complete waste of time that had no reason to exist. And why couldn't Discord just get rid of the vines? S04E07 - Bats!: Legitimate ethical dilemma took second place to Fluttershy becoming a bat because Twilight Sparkle didn't think about spell interaction. Celestia ought to take her wings back and send her back to magic school because that is pretty much what would've happened to a doctor that didn't know to predict two medications interacting. What the hell do they study in Celestia's school? S0E16 - It Ain't Easy Being Breezies: pegasi apparently can't control their wing power. Either too much or too little. The solution: TURN INTO BREEZIES! WEEEEEEEEEE... S04E25-26 - Twilight's Kingdom: Celestia suddenly has the power to wake up in the middle of the night because something is threatening Equestria... She also knows what it is about and sleeps with her royal regalia. Celestia just trusted Discord to deal with Tirek with no supervision and with no help. Why didn't she call the other princesses and wiped the floor with Tirek while he was weak? Then Celestia's plan of giving Twilight their magic and telling her to stick her head in the ground is about as smart as what I just said. How the hell did she keep the throne for 1000 years by herself?? Nevermind... I'll just blame Meghan McCarthy for the nonsense that is this episode... Like Canterlot Wedding. S05E01-02 - The Cutie Map: How the hell does that map work? It simply decides that now is the time to act, when all of the problems it pointed out to the girls must have been happening for a long time before. Twilight simply decided to let Starlight Glimmer go and didn't even seem to mention the fact that there is a dangerous unicorn at large to the other princesses so that she can be searched for. S05E07 - Make New Friends But Keep Discord: Discord has not been turned back into a stone statue after his betrayal. And people complain Rainbow Dash got no punishment in Tanks for the Memories. Celestia has gone insane... Instead of making her parties the way she wants, she makes "normal" parties and them sabotages them by inviting the people she knows are going to ruin them. Does she get off on watching the ponies she attracts to her parties having their nights ruined? Discord made a lame joke that made no sense (specially when Twilight was flying okay to save their asses when fighting Tirek) and then Celestia was the only one laughing. Someone explain to me intention here, because I'm almost convinced that Celestia is insane and with Luna being how she is, I fear Equestria is in need of a revolution. S05E10 - Princess Spike: Cadance... Why didn't you do something? Ponies, why did you take a child seriously? This whole episode wouldn't exist if one of the characters in it had two neurons to spark together. S05E13 - Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep: Luna, grow up... What was she so distraught over? She didn't have time to DO anything as Nightmare Moon. (Princess Twilight Sparkle is so bad it ruins other episodes). This episode should've been about Celestia feeling bad for using the Elements on her sister for a two minute fight where she didn't even say a word. S05E15 - Rarity Investigates!: It was so obvious who the culprit was that the episode's style almost didn't save it, Also, Celestia looking charmed with the obvious creep. Even the comics have done better. S05E17 - Brotherhooves Social: If everybody knew Big Mac was him, then why the hell did he need to dress up and act like that? S05E22 - What About Discord: "Boring", Discord" and "Episode" should never be allowed together. S05E23 - The Hooffields and McColts: I get the reference... As I do with all episodes. But in this context, it made no sense: the two stallions wanted to make things that aren't mutually exclusive, but actually necessary, and they had more than enough space to both do what they wanted. The whole episode is based on a flawed set up. S05E25-26 - The Cutie Re-Mark: worst attempt at the Butterfly Effect ever. The fight scene between Equestria's Lamest and Sombra's slave soldiers was so pathetically executed I couldn't decide if the whole scene was lazy or if the intention was that ponies just can't fight. Ponies had no problem with Nightmare Moon ruling them, plants could grow without a problem in eternal night... What was the problem with Nightmare Moon again? This whole episode feels like an excuse to put the villains on the screen again and it tries to do so much that it manages to not make any of them right. It's a mess, rushed, stupid and mean-spirited. S06E01-02 - The Crystalling: Cadance's abominable little demonic spawn looks like a deformed beast with it's giant wings and horn. When I first saw the episode's teaser, I couldn't decide if Twilight was shocked at the little beast's appearance or because it was an alicorn. Now we have five princesses. Two of them raised by nondescript alicorns of alicornyness on the city of Lazy Vagueness that got accept by the ponies of Equestria as their leaders for plot convenience; one alicorn that just happened to be magical, another that spent years studying and learning about magic and friendship, actually coming to earn her position, and another one that was just born. What a mess. I suppose that Celestia and Luna are still virgins, for not having foals after thousands of years. TL;DR: Equestria's god is not the Fausticorn. It's the marketing department. But beyond that, this episode felt like two episodes hammered together and what good interaction it had between Spike, Starlight Glimmer and Sunburst felt bittersweet when slapped to the rest of this episode. I can't stomach the idea that five adults, fully trained in magic, one of them the captain of the Royal Guard and the other Twilight Goddamn Sparkle can't control a baby, specially after Baby Cakes, when Twilight knew what was implied in caring for the babies. I also find it hard to believe that Sunburst managed to graduate on what is supposed to be a esteemed teaching institution and not know what to do with his acquired knowledge. Also, suddenly, the Crystal serves to protect against the weather. Everything in this episode is just too contrived. And I want to harp about Celestia and Luna coming to a point where they lose to the weather, but it's just pointless. S06E08 - A Hearth's Warming Tail: Luna looks too awesome in it! I'm kidding... It's just another retelling of the classic, but one that manages to suck out the soul of the original because of the stakes becoming too high. In the original, the story was about Scrooge's salvation and because of that was much more intimate and meaningful because it showed that Scrooge's change saved not only him, but also those around him and made everyone's life better. MLP turned it into a stupid fairy tale about monsters and the end of the world because in a world where magic is literally everywhere, this same world is powerless to defend itself from one selfish jerk. I wonder if Celestia is going to look as cool as Luna did, and with such a great song to go with it one day... The point is that it felt like pandering and the whole story didn't mesh very well with MLP's universe to me. The Books: every single one I've read is a lazy, unimaginative waste of time. It's not because they're meant for children. Seuss' books were too, but they were creative and smart, delivering good lessons in an effective way. MLP books are bad excuses to grab money and mess up canon. Particularly the ones where Celestia is present. I'm convinced someone at Hasbro hates her. Equestria Girls: it exists.

How do the Mane Cast rank by personal fame?

I think that MLP isn't very good at delivering this sort of information, mostly because the characters'fame seem to fluctuate wildly with the necessity of the plot. Though I think this is getting less random with later seasons. I get the feeling that the Princesses are kinda like celebrities. Ponies don't really think about them unless it's very relevant to the situation. Really not something I'd expect with those that are supposed to be the rulers/guardians of Equestria. So i think that the Mane Six and princesses are kinda famous and will be recognized, but that doesn't really matter unless the ponies aren't worried about something else. For example... Spike seems to be more famous than all of them in the Crystal Empire and gryphons, yaks don't give a damn about them. I think it's an artifact of how the cartoon works. If it was up to me, ponies would be stopping everything and paying all their attention as soon as a princess or one of the Mane Six are spotted nearby. Octavia, DJ Pon3, Shining Armor, Blueblood, wonderbolts... I don't know enough to make an educated guess.

What are your thoughts on Starlight Glimmer and Trixie

I like Trixie. I think she's funny and I like the way she talks. She had a kinda nice development and we learned more about her as seasons went on. Considering the princesses and the Mane Six are my favorites, Trixie comes in very close to them. Starlight Glimmer... To me she feels like that OC that gets a bad "tragic" backstory goes evil but suddenly everybody likes her as soon as she says "I'm sorry! I'm not bad! I just suffered so much!" And now she's in the layer of the following fic that introduced the character, showing off how awesome she is. I want to like SG, specially since she and Trixie bounced off nicely with each other and because she's a good kind of character (I forgot the term for the character that doesn't know everything and so is a good conduit to deliver exposition to the audience). i just don't want her to become Twilight Sparkle 2.0, with what I'm very worried right now.

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

I was saying your argument is bullshit. That is not crude nor is it a strawman. It' an opinion. And now you're repeating your point that Equestria must be like the US because its writers drew inspiration from it to come up with Equestria. I said that being inspired by something doesn't make it the same. Specially when you want me to remove parts of what defines Equestria and that make it different. And you're saying that I'M building a strawman? Then you're pretty much saying that anything I come up with to show that Equestria is different must be based on something that you allow it to come from when I already said that Equestria should be seem, for the sake of this conversation, as it's own independent world. Can you name THIS logical fallacy?

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

Oh, come on. Don't tell me "bullshit" offended you or something. You're just being condescending. Just like asking "what's so hard to believe about that?" When there is a princess ruling California, said princess got her position for graduating at magical and friendship studies, and the US accepts a president that comes from another country because they admit she's fit to rule them spontaneously, you get back to me with this argument. Drawing inspirations is not the same as making it the same. Equestria may have similarities to the US (there is no way anyone can deny that), but saying that it's necessarily the same and functions in the same way, enough to draw this sort of parallel is a bit too much for me. I get what you're saying, but the US doesn't have rainbow cascades, Washington DC doesn't stand atop a mountain and Obama doesn't raise the sun, people there don't change the weather (at least no the same the ponies do) and I'm pretty sure that apple orchards don't get magically charged and apples turn rainbow colored. I'm also pretty sure that the US National Guard is somewhat more useful than the Royal Guard.
  12. Metemponychosis

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

Bullshit. It is what it is. EDIT: By the way, what do you mean that it is written there?
  13. Metemponychosis

Does the toyetic nature of the show hold it back?

I don't think it does. At least I never noticed it. I have a tendency of thinking that it does, but I can't really put my finger at how this would work. I think that Flurry Heart is an asspull but Twilight's palace kinda fell naturally into the narrative. Cadance kinda felt like another character parachuting into the cartoon to sell toys, too. Of course, the "story" itself exists to serve the marketing department, but that is what keeps the whole thing wrapped. Could the cartoon be "better" if it was different? I think so. Well... SW Rebels exists for the same purpose of selling toys but the storytelling part of it seems to be more important and there certainly is an overarching story being told that MLP just lacks.
  14. Metemponychosis

How would YOU write a Celestia episode?

I think that Celestia needs to be shown as what we are supposed to see her. I mean that Celestia is the ruler that never rules, the teacher that never teaches, the guardian that never protects... You see where I'm going. Now the problem with this is that any episode needs to conform to the show's formula, so it must have an easy to follow moral and it probably demands the presence of certain characters (of which Celestia is certainly not a part of). Back in the day, people used to say that if Twilight dropped the ball, Celestia would catch it. Seeing that would be fine for me, mostly because the cartoon has no qualms about showing the inverse. After all, Twilight is the closest thing this cartoon has to a main character... But the way I see it, everything that happens in this cartoon feels undermined because Celestia doesn't seem to be that impressive. For example: villain X defeated Celestia. So what? She folds like wet tissue every time we see her fight. And yet we know from "lore" that Celestia is not to be trifled with. There seems to be two Celestias: the one that is the badass ruler/defender of Equestria when we're not looking and the stepping stone for every villain when we are looking. And that is if we're lucky enough to see her even mentioned in the episode. I want to see the other Celestia too. The problem with Luna is that she's too popular and we're too used to seeing Celestia making way for others. It would be too easy for the writer to use Celestia as a crutch to talk about Luna some more. But I also don't want to see the opposite. I want an episode that acknowledges Celestia as the character that she is, because of her, not despite Luna, or because of her. It seems that Celestia's defining moments are when Luna does something or when Discord does something, or Sombra, or Discord. Celestia, right now, is not a character. She's a plot device that sets up the stage for those characters to do their things. For example, Luna's dream magic. Celestia needs something like that, where she can function independently so I know that she has her "uses" that are what she brings in when she's helping others. So, Luna has shown her value for herself and to others. Celestia, because I never saw her show her value for herself, feel like she's more of a liability because she never seems capable of doing things by herself. The keyword is "SEEMS". I think it was "Stranger than Fanfiction", where Twilight can't go to Daring Do's convention with Dash because she's busy with Celestia at some important "diplomacy stuff". I want to see leaders shutting up and listening to Celestia when she speaks because she's the 1000+ years old ruler of a nation that seems to be the most stable and happiest one in that mess of a world they live in, even though a bunny stampede can cause panic. People have this weird notion that an episode about that premise would be boring... Diplomacy is fertile ground for social faux pas and political powerplay. If I'm the only one that can see a great moral and funny comedy from this, I need to quit my job and jump on a freelance writer career. Or maybe see Celestia actually helping ponies with stuff. Teaching Twilight how to make to disagreeing parties on a court session come to agreement simply by listening to them and providing insight. Let them butt heads till they're tired of disagreeing and then show them how stupid they were. Or just see Celestia blow shit up, because she seems to be the only princess that never does any of that. Honestly, anything that SHOWS that Celestia occupies a tangible place and has actual importance.
  15. Metemponychosis

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to assume that my boss is the only boss I can have and it's on my preferred job, and I'm not willing to change jobs because of this jerk (those are three assumptions that everything that can go wrong is going horribly wrong just because you want it). If this foreman is ridding my flank, I'm probably not doing a good job. And if that is the case, I'm was going to be taking the same thing here on Earth anyway, so it's the same. But if I am doing a good job, and this guy is still on my case, I'm going to have a talk with the local Princess. She seems to be interested in getting involved in this kind of problem. Why do you assume that my job doesn't pay me enough to retire comfortably or to care for my health. Starting with that, there is another thing... Just because public health is non-existent in the US, I doesn't have to be in Equestria. Specially with the whole friendship theme going on. It may not be perfect, but it doesn't have to be awful either. And again, I'm sure that if Equestria was real, people would take this sort of issue to Twilight and she'd be certain to look into it. Even if it can't be fixed, there is someone that cares taking a look. That is the beauty of Equestria, in my opinion. I used Donald Trump as an example because that is one that americans can relate and understand immediately what I mean. But the problem are politicians in general and the actual democratic process as a whole. We've made a system that elects the one that manages to hide their dirt better than the others or at least can lie better. And in my opinion, it's worse in the US than it is my country. Here, I literally have a dozen of presidential candidates. I doesn't matter which one I vote for, the're ALL corrupt and they're all in bed with all sorts of corporations with all sorts of interests. Or do you thing that Hillary is factually better than Trump? If the cartoon would delve into the politics of Equestria, we'd see some nice things because the princesses are there, they are in control, and they have good intentions. So why care about Blueblood? I care about Celestia and Luna. They're the ones calling the shots. Here, I have to be concerned about the idiots getting elected in my country and then the neanderthal in Russia and the Clown in the US. And by the way, Blueblood is at least a good diplomat. The problem with this discussion is that Earth wins by default because it's real, but loses anyway because we're imagining "what if we could go to this fictional place?". A fictional place that is idealized and has room for solutions that our real world just doesn't. People are going to make their Equestria be better than Earth if they want because it's a place of "good endings" by design. No matter how many monsters appear on Equestria, things always turn out ok. Here, if I make a wrong turn and end up in the bad side of town, the "least worst" that can happen is that I'll lose everything I'm carrying and the "villain" is not even going to be defeated in the end. Unless the writers from the Game of Thrones series take over.
  16. Metemponychosis

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

I'm sure everyone will agree when you manage to lay on a cloud to sleep on a lazy sunny Sunday, or can move objects with magic. Or can talk to your favorite characters. Visit Twilight's palace and live as her subject. Far far away from Donald Trump and the like.
  17. Metemponychosis

How would YOU write a Celestia episode?

If Celestia ever got an episode, I'd do everything in my power to keep Luna as far from it as possible to avoid it becoming about Luna through Celestia. So I guess I failed at your requisites... I want a "Celestia episode", not a "Celestia AND Luna" episode.
  18. Metemponychosis

    Princess Celestia

I kinda makes me happy whenever someone posts something like this. It reminds me that I'm not the only one and that the powers that be are bound to notice that hey need to give Celestia some love. Did you read the Journal of the Two Sisters? I despise it, but you may enjoy it because it does give Celestia *some* spotlight and does make her look good.
  19. Metemponychosis

    The MLP Fandom

Without even reading the other answers, I can say that this is wrong. The fandom isn't dependent on the cartoon and feeds itself. In fact, I think that the cartoon only got where it is because of the fandom. Now, after reading the other answers, if the cartoon ended this week and Hasbro came out and said that MLP-FIM is dead, the fandom would keep going because the content creators (fanfics, fanart, music) can keep it fed for a long time and in my opinion have been shown doing a better job at it than the cartoon itself. What I'm trying to say is that the fandom isn't dependent on the cartoon's success. Every episode could turn into a repetitive mess of recycled ideas (some people think that it already is) and the fandom would keep sites like Equestria Daily and FIMFiction.net going.
  20. Metemponychosis

Would you drop everything and be a pony?!

During the earlier days of the cartoon, when Equestria seemed like a pretty nice place, nicer than the usual on Earth, I would've gone to live there. Specially under these conditions.
  21. Metemponychosis

What if a cast member passed away?

Put another person in the job? Now, I'm not saying that these people aren't important or that their death wouldn't be a loss, but what are the producers going to do? Assuming it's a voice actor, kill the character too? Me? I'd understand and keep watching, judging the new cast member on their own merit. Not really an issue when thinking about the reasons I watch the cartoon.
  22. Metemponychosis

Thoughts on Spike's Love of Rarity?

One of the things that bothers me in MLP (that is mostly in the past now) is the way that Rarity kinda acknowledges that Spike likes her... Or did like... It's another thing I feel has been pulled down. Because it made me feel uncomfortable that Rarity was using Spike's affection of her to make him do favors to her without ever letting him know that he doesn't stand a real chance with her. It was always unclear to me how did Rarity see their "relationship" and how dis she see Spike seeing it. The thing is that Spike is a child and Rarity is an adult, no mater how many caveats there may be about dragons and ponies aging. And while I think that there are fics that deal with this by simply making Rarity wait for him to grow up one way or another, this is never going to see the light of day in the cartoon or comics. MLP is afraid of calling Derpy "Derpy", of Twilight punching Tirek, and Queen Celestia. The cartoon will never touch this, either to put an end or to confirm it.
  23. Metemponychosis

    Guardians of Harmony show.

I have to see it before I can decide if i would watch it. The reason I like MLP is because of the characters. The setting. I think that if focused more on action and adventure, it could open a venue to explore more about the characters, but it's all about execution rather than the idea.
