  7. "It's not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough, and it's been given to us in generous measure for accomplishing the greatest things, if the whole of it is well invested. But when life is squandered through soft and careless living, and when it's spent on no worthwhile pursuit, death finally presses and we realize that the life which we didn't notice passing has passed away. So it is: the life we are given isn't short but we make it so; we're not ill provided but we are wasteful oflife. Just as impressive and princely wealth is squandered in an instant when it passes into the hands of a poor manager, but wealth however modest grows through careful deployment if it is entrusted to a responsible guardian, just so our lifetime offers ample scope to the person who maps it out well."

-Seneca, On the Shortness of Life

Stephen Hawking passes away at age 76

The problem here is clinging to a single person and not the whole. The physics community - or really, any scientific community - isn't the product of any single persons. It's a collective effort. I would sooner mourn the death of the physics community than a single person in it for the totality of research lost.
  9. "[I learned] From Diognetus, not to busy myself about trifling things, and not to give credit to what was said by miracle-workers and jugglers about incantations and the driving away of daemons and such things; and not to breed quails for fighting, nor to give myself up passionately to such things; and to endure freedom of speech; and to have become intimate with philosophy; and to have been a hearer, first of Bacchius, then of Tandasis and Marcianus; and to have written dialogues in my youth; and to have desired a plank bed and skin, and whatever else of the kind belongs to the Grecian discipline."

    -Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

So then, why mourn? Contribution is permanent, at least for as long as it remains unchallenged by the observation of new facts or data that challenge the fundamental underlying theory, particularly important to the realm of physics.

What did everyone get up to last weekend??

Nothing. Prior to that was nothing but dinners at my mom's, once for no particular reason but getting whoever and anyone together to have dinner together and chat. The next for my step-brother's birthday three weeks delayed because all the circumstances of life. Shot off guns and drank home-brewed beer. This weekend is Saint Pat's so I'm scheduled to see my dad this Saturday and have lunch with him and my stepmom.
