Battle Gem Ponies DevLog #71 (Final Finals Week, Finally)
Just one more week of hell exams and I'm out of here! A free man at last, ready to take on the world and prove a lot of people wrong. Crazy forces are at work, keeping me away from Unity and working on the game at all. Things like car tags, crashing laptops, and exam cramming won't be enough to stop me completely though.
Get the rest here.
Battle Gem Ponies: Pre-Alpha 4.5 [Delayed because BUGS]
Version 4.5 was supposed to be up today...
This one's a minor update with some bug fixes, new sprites, new text box system, and full gamepad/keyboard support. It's a sort of halfway point between the last version and the big jump to version 5 (where the game starts looking real). Too bad the gamepad control functionality is acting up. Now whenever a menu pops up, the game gets confused as to what the button presses do and locks you into a certain screen, making the game unplayable.
As always, when the game is ready it'll be up on Itch.io. I'm betting the bugs can be squashed by the time final exams are over and I can concentrate on it. I'm kinda drowning in last minute projects and cram sessions, so programming this game an hour at a time isn't getting me very far.
Look forward to the 4.5 update in early May.
Battle Gem Ponies DevLog #70 (PCT Game Jam Spring 2016)
I made a Game Jam title this weekend about a mermaid with a monster mouth that eats smaller fish. And yes, the text in the logo is a mashup of Hungry Howie's, The Little Mermaid, and Viral Hunger. The theme was Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
I woke up that morning with the vision of some kind of game involving mermaids and Fish Feaster with Shantae style graphics. I managed to make that random dream fit with the theme by adding elements of escalating difficulty and humor.
Get some more #GameJam goodness over here!
Battle Gem Ponies: Steel Class Moves
You'll need to steel yourself for these hard-edge attacks and defensive buffs. Making puns like this gets hard as steel after a while. I steel can't even believe I'm letting this paragraph get published. Oh well... Better steel yourself for this one. Hardcore moves like these make the Steel class one of the toughest in the game.
Grab your hard hat and come see which Steel Attacks will help you cut through the competition!
Battle Gem Ponies DevLog #69 (Lookin' Good)
Getting pretty excited about graduating so soon, but with that comes the pressure of finishing these last few exams with top grades to make sure nothing goes wrong. Nightmare scenario would be the surprise failure of a class and having to take a summer course. To make sure I get out of here alive, I'll need to cut out some dev time to "study" (memorize answers to questions in the short-term so I can regurgitate them in a couple weeks, like a good little student).
After all this madness... Freedom is so close. Check out this week's madness with the link below.
Final BYOC at Penn College
Last Saturday I submitted Battle Gem Ponies to the Game Expo and I got a lot of nice feedback from the random players who decided to give the game a try. Look below for the gist of what else happened at the big gaming party of the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Find out more about what went down over here.
Battle Gem Ponies DevLog #68 (Miitomo, Con Plans, & BYOC)
I learned a lot of things this week. Much of it was research, some of it was experiencing another live demo showcase, and I got to think about where I want to be in a few years a bit more. My first big spend in a while was the Rewired Unity plugin that easily allows for controller and keyboard input, eliminating one of the game's fussiest problems for the price of $45.
In terms of big news the crazy fun Penn College BYOC happened on Saturday, I'm excited to graduate in less than a month, and I plan to attend BronyCon in July, FillyCon in August, and Magfest in January before launching my Steam Greenlight campaign.
Lots of planning for the future and this hectic week in review on the Yotes Games site!
Battle Gem Ponies: Draco Class Moves
Dragons are the coolest. Whether flying, crawling, swimming, or digging dragons just look the best doing it. They rest on the top of the food chain and have a fearsome power that you don't want to mess with without some daedric armor! Even though they're mostly defensive tanks, these Dragon class moves pack a crazy, fire-breathing punch. Learn what draconic power you can possess, and see which one will be essential to your team.
Dive in and take a look at some Draco Attacks!
Battle Gem Ponies has a whole new look! Or at least some new tiles anyway. The game feels more real without the placeholders. I also might be attending FillyCon in Philadelphia this August. Might as well if I'm in the area that month. A lot of this week was spent doing marketing stuff. All the big prep before the big Demo 5 release.

Derp? On April Fool's?
Meet Derpzee. This pony is very clumsy, but has great potential. Think of her as a mix between Derpy from MLP, and Slaking or Magikarp from Pokemon because that's what I thought of when designing her. There's nothing set in stone about Derpzee just yet, but I just had to share something silly for April Fool's Friday.
Hope you look forward to meeting her in the final game.

Battle Gem Ponies is an indie game project coming to Mobile and PC platforms. You command super-powered, shape-shifting ponies in strategic turn-based RPG combat. Embark on a journey to become the best pony trainer in the world and protect the world from those who want to use the powerful ponies for evil. Battle other players in a variety of multiplayer modes both online and offline using either a team developed in the single player mode or by selecting and customizing a team from a list of available ponies. The game is currently in Pre-Alpha (Ver. 4) and new builds are uploaded every couple months with added features and bug fixes. It's mostly a one-man project by me, @TonyYotes, with music done by E^2 and Blucario. Please give it a try if you're curious and keep an eye out for the Steam Greenlight campaign coming in January! Download Battle Gem Ponies Here! (Or watch the latest Trailer!) It's a simple work-in-progress RPG coming out March 2017.
Battle Gem Ponies Movesets (Light, Heavy, Status, and Special) Moves make up the core of the gameplay in Battle Gem Ponies, so having Light, Heavy, Status, and Special Attacks will promote strategic play. People will customize their movesets with the limitations of one strong move (with little GP), one weaker move (Enough GP to usually last the whole match), a status move (affecting gameplay beyond just lowering enemy HP), and a special attack (wildcard moves that can't be learned naturally). You can look here for the full blog post explaining how it works and why this style was chosen over Pokemon's freeform move slots.
Each week I'll be posting the latest devlog or any major updates to the game. These are reposts from the official website where you can find links to everything I've ever worked on. For an example, see the post below: DevLog #66 Now that was a climb. Demo 4 is out there on the web now and it looks like hundreds of people are enjoying it. Feels good taking another step forward, but this mountain is still another year tall. Plans for Demo 5 are written and ready to be executed! See what the latest release means for Yotes Games on the official blog.
The latest Battle Gem Ponies demo is available to download just in time for Easter weekend! This demo introduces party management, bug fixes, battle polish, sweet music tracks, a pony follower, and some new artwork! Explore the town, cave, and island areas or battle against random computer opponents right from the main menu!
It's a simple RPG with a ton of features on the way. I aim to release the next demo in April.
Most of the work this time around was behind the scenes stuff that won't be revealed for a while, but design-wise, the game is more thought out now and on a much more reasonable development schedule. The next demo will be the post-BYOC build and is set to have working multiplayer, tons of polish, and pony customization.
You can find details about the upcoming combat system and new release date on the dev blog.
Battle Gem Ponies is a Pokemon-style game I'm making, coming to mobile and PC early next year!
Reaching out to tons of social media sites today. Laying out the groundwork to get my game on Steam this winter.
