In Rarity's case, probably because we've all known people like her, plus she's a diva and knows it.

 

In Dash's case, because she's so cool.

 

In Derpy's case, because she's just so darned adorable.

 

BTW, I feel slightly guilty for leaving Book Horse off my list.  But she's suffered the last few seasons from "straight-man disease", relieved only by the epic battle in "Twilight's Kingdom pt. 2" and the "I'm pancake" moment in "Castle, Sweet Castle."  Whatever happened to the charmingly adorkable Twilight of "Lesson Zero", "It's About Time" and that episode with the hydra.

Applejack is only 2nd because Fluttershy exists, otherwise she would be the very best, like no one ever was.

And wow what the hell is how is Fluttershy getting so many votes, she does almost nothing most of the time. 

Pinkie, Rarity and RD are performing as expected, RD and Rarity having about equal fanbases, Pinkie's being smaller. Goes with what I see on most sites Twilight is weirdly underpreforming.

Because they have the most clear arcs in the show and we've seen em grow the most. Plus really if you have any ambition or WANT to have it, you can ether relate to them or admire them.

Though in my eyes Rarity's arc has been pulled off a lot better so she ranks well above RD to me.
