Pinkie = hit-or-miss.

Maud & Starlight = win.

Verdict: 3/5 or 4/5. (Kind-of teeters, doesn't it?)

I thought it was alright. I did think it was nice that Starlight and Maud became friends. However, I wasn't too fond of Pinkie Pie in this episode. You can probably tell by my username that I normally like her, but in this episode, I thought she was getting too carried away. I know it's like her to get carried away and I usually find that to be amusing, but I wasn't really amused this time. I do like that she realized she was going too far in the end, though.

For the most part, I like Maud Pie, her humor, and the development she went in this episode. Cave paradise scene is nice. Boulder was hilarious. Starlight received some good development, a better relationship with Pinkie Pie, and a new friend in Maud Pie which these help to alleviate a major problem of her being underdeveloped.

But Pinkie Pie was a pretty big problem in the episode as she was overbearing to the point of it being obnoxious. Fortunately the episode does point out how wrong she was to behave like that and she does apologize for it, even if she dabbed into it a bit at the end. Also Maud not realizing she was getting eaten felt very incredulous.

My first impressions of it are a C-C+ range. Worst episode of season 7 yet, but not a bad episode by a long shot.

Exactly how I feel about What About Discord?: Worst Discord episode yet, but just an average one at worst.

I liked this episode and actually made me laugh out loud. What was more funnier to me is that earlier today somebody joked about Starlight being in the episode and befriending Maud and I was like "Naaaah, she will use her invisibility spell she uses in non Starlight episodes". Needless to say I had to eat my words.

Anyway about this episode? Yeah sure Pinkie was annoying but that was kinda the point of the episode so she didn't bother me as much. I find her annoying like this often really, just never in episode where she stars so that was a weird thing. Pinkie still managed to be funny to me despite her annoying behavior. And well I liked every pony else.

And before you ask, the best moment for me was Pinkie presenting the lyra Rock. It looks exactly like Lyra Heartstrings!

Started out kind of weak, but I think it started to gain momentum by the time Starlight and Maud met. Not as good as the previous two episodes, but it has it's moments.

Starlight and Maud were the highlights here, without question.

After really bad performances in Every Little Thing and To Where, this is Starlight's third consecutive good appearance, and her growth continues. Trixie's and Starlight's friendship's very energetic, but Starlight's and Maud's friendship is very casual. You can tell she's grown a lot since she first arrived in Ponyville one-plus season ago. More self-assuring than before.

Maud was really good, too. One of her better performances of the show. Her anti-humor was dry when it needed to be, but sincere and serious when it needed to be, too. Maud isn't nor should be merely a vessel for dry humor. She should be more than that to round out her character and not make her one-note.

Their bond was fantastic. Something about Maud Pie the episode that clicks poorly is how much the RM5 tried to get acquainted to Maud, but never do, and try to force a resolution out of it. There was never any genuine growth nor understanding between Maud and the others. When Maud is with a ReMane character, there's some sort of friction. There was a little bit of friction to start here, too, but what this episode does right in comparison to the S4 episode is how the between Maud and Starlight evolves over the course. They have something in common, and, no, it's not the kite. It's how Starlight and Maud not only listen to each other, but understand each other, too. They can imagine the other's point of view — see in each other's shoes. Maud's reasoning for being so close with rocks is very personal, which the show didn't do until today. I'm not sure why it's the case. For a show writer's point of view, could be because Maud's passion for rocks is mostly gag-centric. But for a canonical point of view, it implies that Maud will only do it to those who can relate to her, which Starlight shows.

That said, this episode could've done more to help Maud get better acquainted. Remember, she only became friends with one Ponyville resident. Ponyville's a pretty big village with all sorts of personalities. There are a lot of characters that she can acquaint and have something in common if you can arrange the time. Unfortunately, RSF doesn't delve into that, and it leaves Maud's transition into Ponyville only half-full.

Pinkie's obnoxiousness is understandable. In the beginning, she's super-excited because her sister officially became a doctor, which is very difficult to do. And it's understandable why she butted into Maud's business when trying to explore Ponyville and bonding with others in Ponyville. Nevertheless, that doesn't change the fact how nosy and obnoxious she is. Sure, she may not be completely observant, she's still very sensitive and should understand how Maud needs time to adjust to Ponyville. She should remember how butting into other people's business caused a great deal of problems: Look no further than A Friend in Deed. Rather than try to force a friendship, let it build. Yes, the lessons are different, but the secondary theme remains. Furthermore, her actions suggest that Pinkie doesn't completely trust Maud, even though they're supposedly very close. It's like the episode doesn't completely understand Pinkie. This semi-break of continuity hurts Pinkie's character and bogs down the episode.

The moral itself — "There's no one true way into making friends — is fine. However, this episode feels like there could be an entirely different moral with maybe a more direct theme. Remember the theme of this episode: Maud is trying to decide which place to move to, the Ghastly Gorge or Ponyville. But there's also a side-theme of Pinkie trying to convince her to move to Ponyville over the Ghastly Gorge. Perhaps the theme of the episode could be only trying to convince Maud to move. But rather than Pinkie getting in the way, she just watches from afar and hopes everything moves swimmingly. Use Pinkie's growth over the seasons, her instinct, and trust of Maud to help forge friendships and influence her decision to relocate to Ponyville.

Is it good? No. But is it bad? No. It's above-average.

I very much enjoyed this episode. While I don't think the first 3 episodes of the season were bad, this is so far my favorite of the season. The comedy was spot on and I was laughing every time. Particularly with Starlight's quips to Pinkie. And that Derpy cameo was great too.

Maud was really cool

Pinkie was obnoxious and annoying but it's Pinkie

Starlight was nice

I'm still trying to comprehend the fact that Maud inadvertently helped Starlight enslave Our Town. @_@ That's been a tough thing for me to wrap my head around. (I think I said that wrong)

blah blah blah viewer discretion warning blah blah blah

This episode was good at first.

The Pinkie and Maud antics are always the BEST and it was still the BEST in this episode. :gleepony:

However...

ANY. OTHER CHARACTER. If Maud's friend was ANY OTHER CHARACTER I would have liked this episode a whole lot more. But no. More BS expectation to like the HORRID NOT REDEEMED character. :angrytwi:

Also... I'm not mad at Maud for helping Starlight be a dictatorship bitch. She didn't know what she was up to so that wasn't exactly her fault.

The Pinkie antics were great as always and I just really like Maud and her character and her 'monotone' behavior which gets a laugh every time.

I'm also glad we may be seeing Maud more now that it seems she's moved to Ponyville. Or, I guess Ponyville Adjacent? Eh. It's still Ponyville.

Don't get me wrong. I didn't hate the episode. Just... ANY. OTHER. CHARACTER. :applebelch:

I can't in good conscious do anything to the percentage. Sorry.

Overall it was a good episode but the continued expectation to like a HORRID NOT REDEEMED character is ridiculous.

Current Status:

Stay: 30%
Leave: 70%

Reason: To be honest... I'm sick of repeating myself. It should be obvious why and I also stated it above. No change whatsoever unfortunately.

And again you pop up to whine about Starlight.

I found this episode to be great. In fact, this is the first Maud episode I really liked. (I found the others just okay.) I have to admit, I'm really liking how Starlight is being handled this season.

Then stop.

Anyway, I kinda don't know where the writers are going with Glimmy.  She's been in almost every episode this season, which tells me they're trying to build her up to something big in a short amount of time.  Not sure what that is but I can probably guess that it involves a 7th Element and new seat at the Cutie Map.

Maude is the most boring thing in this cartoon to me and this episode didn't... Click with me in the beginning. And then Starlight Glimmer came into the episode. Wow. Did she save this one. And we also got a bit of background on Starlight Glimmer. Nicely done, DHX.

Pinkie was.. Annoying. But I suppose that this was the intention.

All in all an okay episode. I just wish it had ended when Pinkie left SG in her bedroom. I can't believe I wanted SG back in the episode.
