All the EU shit was thrown out the window, so it could be for literally any reason. I suspect the crossguard is going to be there soley for Rule of Cool

Not entirely thrown out, though. More like "it's not canon anymore (or rather, it's own separate canon), but we can take anything we want from it and use it in the new canon"; like how Darth Bane appeared in The Clone Wars, or how Sienar Fleet Systems and the Imperial Security Bureau appear in Star Wars Rebels.

Basically they made it all noncanon and are slowly making what they like canon.

Well Star Wars was based on Books, now they need to continue without them. What makes this harder. Also why are you trying to discuss about a film that tried to keep everything simple. 

And it possibly will keeps it that way.
