M2 Ball 1,462 Report post Posted January 1, 2019 I finally got around to purchasing a CZ-75 SP-01 Tactical handgun. It's an absolute joy to shoot!
ABronyAccount 4,260 Report post Posted January 2, 2019 I bought a new new scanner to replace my old new scanner. I recommend staying away from the Canon CanoScan LiDE 2xxx line. Apparently they have a tendency to lock the scanning head, and you might have to disassemble it (voiding the warranty). I could try DIY repairs, but honestly if it's going to be THAT flimsy I'd rather try something else.

ABronyAccount 4,260 Report post Posted February 21, 2019 My favorite part about tapes was being able to listen to one side, which then automatically re-wound the other side. The fact that each side was roughly 45 minutes long also meant you could usually fit at least 3 older albums on one tape. Also, cassette mechanisms were so inexpensive that stereo systems often had CD-to-Tape dubbing features, basically format-shifting for you when you played a CD and wanted a copy on tape. Tapes were pretty robust, all things considered. Lots of listening material at my county library is on 20-30 year old cassettes. I bought an old set of The Shadow radio plays for about $2 as fodder to practice transferring and mastering materials in Audacity.

ABronyAccount 4,260 Report post Posted March 18, 2019 Oh jeez that takes me back. Moreso than the tapes! Back in high school, I used to have an oversized leather overcoat. The pockets were large enough to accommodate a portable CD player in one pocket and a wallet full of discs in the other. So it also tended to be what I wore when insomnia had me in its cruel grasp (really, almost every night back then) and I had to go take long walks in the small hours of the morning. I was very grateful for the advent of anti-skip read-ahead technology, right up until I replaced the CD player with a Sony NetMD minidisk player. Those minidisks could hold a whole gigabyte! And I could fit TWO albums on each one! This was back when flash-based MP3 players typically had storage measured in tens of megabytes, so it seemed like the clear winner at the time. Plus it ran for like two weeks on one AA battery!

ABronyAccount 4,260 Report post Posted July 11, 2019 Dual deck! Swanky! 2 CDs featuring all the back-issues of a quarterly publication dedicated to North American native fishes, from the North American Native Fishes Association. 1 T-shirt (charcoal grey) featuring the logo of the North American Native Fishes Association and a Southern Redbelly Dace. Came with a bonus! 1 Decal featuring the logo of the North American Native Fishes Association and a Carolina Pygmy Sunfish. 2 replacement sun visor clips for a 2008 Honda Fit that had nothing to do with North American native fishes. My old ones broke so the sun visors would just flop around while driving unless I jammed them up against the windshield. 1 set of in-channel window deflectors for a 2008 Honda Fit. This did not have anything to do with fishes, whether native to North America or otherwise. I just want to be able to leave my windows cracked without worrying about rain. ABronyAccount 4,260 Report post Posted July 28, 2019 Purchased some books that have been on my wish-list for a while. At the Water's Edge by Carl Zimmer. A truly fantastic look at how creatures with backbones crawled out of the sea, turned into not-fish, and then crawled back into it at a later date. Haven't read it in (mumble) years but decided it was time to get a copy for my personal library. In Darkest South Carolina by Brian Hicks. A look at a nigh-aristocratic white judge from Charleston, SC who moved mountains to drag the state kicking and screaming out of Segregation, making him a virtual outcast among his peers. He was on a first-name basis with Thurgood Marshall and helped formulate the legal strategy that would ultimately destroy Segregation federally in the Supreme Court with Brown vs. Board of Education. Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt Isaac Woodard by Richard Gergel. More background and foreground for the most pivotal cases by the aforementioned South Carolina judge which played into the largest successes of the Civil Rights movement in the mid-20th century. Freshwater Fishes of South Carolina by Rohde, Arndt, Foltz and Quattro. Pretty much what it says on the tin! Unfortunately I won't have much opportunity to dig into these for the next few weeks, work is really grinding and free time will be extremely scarce.
